If you’re a true fashion lover, you know that you can’t just throw your designer bags in a closet and expect them to keep looking fabulous throughout the years. These luxury pieces (often made by skilled craftsmen using exotic materials) deserve some extra special care to make sure you’ll be wearing them with love and showing them off for seasons to come. To keep them in pristine condition, which will also help retain their value over a longer period, you have to know how to store them properly. Here’s how you can do it:

Pick the right space for storage.

Please don’t store your bags somewhere where the temperature can fluctuate between extremes. You don’t want to find out what happens to an expensive leather bag when it gets prolonged exposure to heat or humidity. The material can dry out, crack, or worse, grow mold. Then you’ll need to hire experts in leak detection services just to make sure your storage space is truly cool and dry.

Keep the bags away from direct sunlight, too. Though it may be tempting to store the bags behind a glass case so you can admire them for being the functional works of art they can be, sunlight can fade colours and damage materials. Choose a space that’s shielded from those ultraviolet rays.

Finally, dust bags provide extra protection for your collection. Keep the pieces in individual dust bags, or wrap them up with some soft tissue paper or cloth.

Prep your bags before storing them away.

Before putting them in storage, clean your designer bags carefully and thoroughly. Check the care instructions usually provided by the brand before attempting to remove any stains or debris your bag may have accumulated from use. Better yet, get the bags cleaned by a professional so you can rest easy knowing that the task will be done with expertise.

To keep a bag from losing its shape or developing wrinkles, you can stuff it with some tissue paper. Don’t use old newspapers since the inks on the page could transfer to your bag’s material, especially if it happens to be a light colour.

If your bag comes with clasps or buckles, close them properly. If it has a drawstring closure, you can tighten it, but not too much so you won’t risk accidentally stretching the fabric.

Use shelves if you have limited space.

If you have a sizeable collection of bags and you don’t have enough closet space, consider using shelves. Make sure they’re installed in a spot of your house where you don’t have to worry about detecting leaks or shielding leather bags from sunlight. Arrange them so there would be enough space to accommodate the pieces in your collection if they have varying heights and sizes. You should also choose shelves that are padded to prevent any sharp edges from scratching the bags.

However, if you do decide to use shelves, keep in mind that this would make your bags easily accessible to anyone in your household. Take the time to communicate with your family members or roommates about the importance or value of your possessions so you won’t have to worry about any of them accidentally damaging your items through carelessness. You’ll get to have peace of mind, too.

With the proper storage and care, your luxury handbags can turn into true heirlooms that you will enjoy for future decades of your life.
